Why do people sin?
A: Dear Timmintra,
The Bible tells us that people sin for two main reasons. First of all, we sin because we have sinful natures (see Psalm 51:5) The Bible tells us that when Adam sinned, his human nature became corrupted. As a result, he passed that nature on to us, just like our moms and dads pass on to us eye color, hair color, temperaments, etc. A sinful nature means we naturally desire what is wrong instead of what is right. Jesus said “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:6). He was saying that since we are born.
The second reason is because we choose to sin. Jesus came to pay the penalty for our sin so we could be saved. He also came to give us the strength to overcome our sinful natures and choose to obey Him instead.
Thanks for writing, and remember, there's never been a better time to share Jesus!
